That’s My King!
Claire Black: This is True Girl, podcast for girls and their moms. I’m Claire Black. Together, we’ll explore God’s truth for us one drive at a time!
Song:
I am a true girl.
Oh, oh, oh, oh.
I am, I am, I am a true girl!
Who’s in the driver’s seat today? I bet it’s your mom or dad, and that’s good, since they probably have a driver’s license!
But who’s in the driver’s seat of your life? We want that to be King Jesus, and we’re going to talk about Him today.

Yancy and Dannah are both appearing in certain cities for the True Girl Crazy Hair Tour right now. You might also see Suzy Weibel, Lorelle Phillips, and Kasey Rae Brown at one of those live events. They want to encourage you to become God-crazy girls! Learn more at MyTrueGirl.com.
Well, let’s get moving for season 23, episode 4, called “That’s My King.”
Dannah Gresh: Hey, True Girl, it’s Dannah. I’m so glad you’re here today, because this episode is all about one big question:
Who is your King?
I’m talking about the one you listen to. The one you follow. The one who gets the final say in your life.
Because every girl has a king. I’m going to define that as a king is something or someone that you live for. In other words, it’s whatever is the boss of you.
And let me just say, it’s pretty normal for girls to make the wrong things in their lives the boss of them. I’m thinking of things like :
What your friends think about you. It not that that it not good to have a good reputation and be thought of favorably. But when you are obsessed with what your friends think about you and you are willing to do anything so they accept you—even if it is in contrast to what God wants you to do—that’s a problem.
Some girls let their grades be the boss of them. Again, we are supposed to study our Bibles to show ourselves as “workmen who are approved by God.” That means we are supposed to study our Bibles hard. And I think we are supposed to do everything with all our might, with all our strength, with all our power with the help of Jesus.
But when we become defined by being a girl that gets all A’s, and we don’t rest, and there’s no peace in that; that means your grades are the boss of you.
Some girls are obsessed with getting on a sports team, and their whole lives revolve around it. Their practice and their ability are the boss of them. The problem is, what if you get hurt and you can’t play that sport anymore? You king doesn’t serve you well.
Sometimes screens are the boss of us. We’ve obsessed with devices. Maybe you have an ipad or something like that. Maybe you even already have a phone. And you just can’t live without it. You literally cry if you go out of cell service. You screen has become the boss of you.
I want you to look around this week. You are going to see some who have made these the king of their world. Those things get the first and last say in everything they think, say, or do. But I’ve got to tell you something, that honor belongs to King Jesus.
By now the key verse of our season is probably familiar. I, of course, have it memorized from the True Girl Crazy Hair Tour. But I’m going to go ahead and read it to you from my Bible. I want to be sure I get every, single word right. This is 2 Corinthians 5:13–14.
If it seems we are crazy, it is to bring glory to God. And if we are in our right minds, it is for your benefit. Either way, Christ’s love controls us. Since we believe that Christ died for all, we also believe that we have all died to our old life.
Last week we talked about the phrase “Christ’s love controls us.” And we focused on His love. But that word “controls” . . . we’re going to deal with it today.
It means when you choose Jesus, He gets the first and last say in everything you do. Your old life doesn’t get to be the boss of you.
All the things the world says are “normal” start to fade away when you experience the love of Christ.
Of course, I’m talking about the craving popularity and acceptance, the perfectionism in your school work, the obsession with sports and performance. Those things become less important to you. They all start to submit to the Lordship of Jesus when you experience His love. You’re going to start, not completely, but you’ll be less tempted to sin. Things like:
- Gossip
- Fighting
- Lying
- Disrespecting your parents
- Always demanding your own way instead of laying your life down for others
Those are the kind of things the Bible calls your old life before Jesus—before Jesus was King, before you knew the love of Jesus. And when you follow Jesus, that old life dies—not because God wants to take your fun away, He’s not a killjoy—but because you’ve found something so much better: King Jesus!
Today I want you to meet someone who sings boldly about her King Jesus. I’m calling my friend Yancy. Yancy is a worship leader who has devoted her life to worship songs specifically for children, specifically for children’s ministries. She’s going to be joining us in select cities on the True Girl Crazy Hair Tour this season. You might already know her music.
Today we’re going to be talking to her about a powerful worship song. She didn’t write it, and we’ve heard it in other places. You might know this song. The title of it is “That’s My King.”
The reason I want to talk about this song is, first of all, we’ll be singing it on the True Girl Crazy Hair Tour. But, I think it’s an essential ingredient—the words in this, the worship attitude in this song—if you want to be a girl who stands out and stands up for Jesus.
So, let’s just try and call Yancy. I did hear that she’s flying today. She’s between flights, and is probably on her way to a worship event. I’ll ask her. Let’s go ahead and call her and try to catch her.
[phone ringing]
Yancy: Hello.
Dannah: Hey, Yancy!
Yancy: Hi, how are you?
Dannah: Hey, Yancy, this is Dannah and like 20,000 True Girls listening.
Yancy: Oh, my goodness, all of you True Girls.
Dannah: I hope it's okay that we call you. I hear you're flying somewhere. Are you on your way to a worship event?
Yancy: I am. I'm in-between flights and headed to go have a bunch of fun with some families and lead them in worship tonight. It's gonna be fun!
Dannah: I love it. I love that you've devoted your whole life to that. We're gonna talk about why in just a minute. But I told the True Girls today on the podcast we're talking about Jesus as our King. I told them that one of my favorite versions of “That's My King” is by you. So hold on a second. If you can, I want to play that for them.
Song: "That's My King"1
I wish I could tell you,
Wish I could describe it;
Cause I can’t contain it
Can’t keep it to myself.
There aren’t enough colors
To paint the whole picture;
Not enough words
To ever say what I found.Wonderful and beautiful
And glorious and holy
He is merciful and powerful.
Who we talkin’ about?
That’s my King!
We declare the glory,
Give Him all the honor,
Altogether worthy.
Who we talkin’ about?
That’s my King! There’s no one before You.
Yes we will adore You;
All of this is for You.
Who we talkin’ about?
That’s my King!I’m not letting the rocks cry,
Without joining the chorus.
There aren’t enough notes
To make the harmony.
It’s the song of the angels
Through all of the ages.
It's all of the earth
And heaven’s symphony.Wonderful and beautiful
And glorious and holy
He is merciful and powerful.
Who we talkin’ about?
That’s my King!We declare the glory,
Give Him all the honor,
Altogether worthy.
Who we talkin’ about?
That’s my King!
There’s no one before You.
Yes we will adore You;
All of this is for You.
Who we talkin’ about?
That’s my King!
Who we talkin’ about?
That’s my King!
Dannah: I absolutely love that song, because it reminds us that Jesus is our King. When He is your King, everything changes. Yancy, talk to me about the lyrics of that song. Why did you pick it? Why does it mean something to you, and what do we need to learn about it?
Yancy: Yeah, I love this song. Obviously, it's just a happy, exciting song, but I think one of my favorite parts in the song is the pre-chorus, where it says, “Wonderful and beautiful, glorious and holy; He is merciful and powerful.”
I just love getting to rattle off all those things and name just a few of the amazing things about Jesus as our king.
But I also love in verse 2 where it talks about not letting the rocks cry out. And, you know, that's something that's in the Bible. It's talked about that we as creation are to give God our praise, and if we don't do it, He is going to be praised. The very rocks, like all nature, things that surround us, they bring glory to God too. And if we don't do our part, they'll just fill in for us.
But I don't want that to happen. I want to do the thing that God made us to do on this earth, and that is to celebrate Him, to give Him praise, to tell all the people in my life just how amazing He is and how worthy He is of all the attention we could ever give Him.
Dannah: So, so good. You know, we were just talking about how all of us have a desire to sin. Jesus is worthy of being our King, in part, because He overcame our sin for us on the cross. And yet, there's still a desire to sin—things like gossip or fighting or lying or disrespecting our parents or craving popularity or perfectionism in schoolwork.
Those things try to be the boss of us, and they try to be our kings, right? But how does it help when we sing a song like this, and we say the words: wonderful, beautiful, glorious, merciful, powerful. How does that help us get rid of the false kings in our life and keep Jesus on the throne of our heart?
Yancy: One of the things I love about singing the lyrics and songs like this one is it is full of such a powerful confession for us? It's like us making a decision as we sing these words to say, “You know what? This is how I'm going to live. This is what I'm going to choose. This is where I'm going to place God—above all the other things in my life. I'm going to let Him be number one and be the King of kings and the Lord of lords.”
That's one of the gifts that we have in singing praise and worship songs. Those words by the songwriter are really a gift to us that we can use to speak out and sing out over our life—just to make that daily choice to say, “I’m going to follow Jesus.”
Dannah: Yeah, it's like singing the songs helps us remember what we might have forgotten.
Yancy: Yeah, I love that.
Dannah: You know. I just feel compelled to ask you, when did you decide for Jesus to be your King? We've been telling our salvation stories on this episode, this season of the podcast.
Yancy: I don't know for sure exactly how old I was, but I know I was like six or seven years old. It was summertime, and we were on a road trip as a family. We were actually in the car driving down the road. I had just been prompted with a question about something, and just decided right then and there to make that decision and choice, and have never looked back.
Dannah: I love that. And True Girl, if you've never made that decision, talk to your mom today, and open your Bible and understand, “What does it mean to make Jesus the King of your life? What does it mean to be a Christian according to God's Word?” We talked about that in episode 2 of this season. We laid that out really clearly.
Yancy, I'm gonna let you go in a minute, but a lot of girls are going to be coming to the True Girl Crazy Hair Tour this season from all over the country. We're gonna be in roughly thirty cities, and you are going to make appearances as the worship leader in some cities. Casey Ray Brown is going to be making appearances in some cities. I'm going to be making an appearance as the teacher or Suzy Weibel in other cities.
How can those moms and daughters who are planning to come and worship at the True Girl Crazy Hair Tour, or, for that matter, everyone listening who's going to go to church this week and worship, how can they prepare their hearts so that that worship isn't just singing words, but it is actually acknowledging Jesus as our King?
Yancy: I think something I would encourage everyone to do is just really pray. Pray about it before you even show up, and just say, “Jesus, I want to encounter You. I want not only to learn more about You this evening, but I want to come in here, and I want to take the steps that I need to take to draw close to You. Worship is an awesome opportunity for us to spend time with Jesus.
I say, like any relationship you have in life, you've got to talk to that person. You've got to spend time with them. And so worship is one of the ways that we talk to and we spend time with Jesus.
We're going to be doing that on the True Girl Tour, and I can't wait to be out there with all the moms and daughters. I want you to know it's an invitation for you to step into declaring that Jesus is King, but also just experiencing His presence through the times of worship we're going to have.
Dannah: I love that. That's so great. Well, I'm going to let you get on that airplane, because I don't you to be late to take care of the people are going to lead in worship tonight. But, I'll see you soon. I can't wait to hug you. God bless.
Yancy: Okay, perfect. Thanks guys, see ya.
Dannah: Bye. Wasn't that conversation great? And don't you love that song? “That's My King” by Yancy. I love that song because it reminds us of something really important.
Jesus is our King! You’ve found Jesus, you’ve found a King worth living for.
We don’t give up the world and the things that want to be the boss of us because we’re bored with the world. We give those things up because Jesus is so much more satisfying, and we want people to know our King.
The way we love, the way we forgive, the way we stand out and stand up for Jesus, all of it says one thing loud and clear: that’s my King! And of course, our hearts are pointed to King Jesus when we say it.
I’m so glad you joined me today, True Girl. And remember—when Jesus is your King, you don’t have to live like the world anymore. You get to live for Him.
I’ll see you next time.
Claire: Is Jesus your King? What a powerful question to consider. When He is, He gets the first and last say in everything you do.
